New to Braai?

A Braai is a South African wood-fired barbecue built around a moving ember maker - you light logs, let them burn down to embers, then grill, roast or slow-cook. Unlike gas or charcoal grills, a Braai gives you full control over heat and real wood flavour.

Firebrick-lined base · Even heat & oven effect

A unique Argentine touch, exclusive to the Smoak Braai

This Braai features an added layer of firebricks on the base, an Argentine-inspired element that distributes heat more evenly across the cooking surface for a more consistent, controlled cook.

The firebrick base also develops a natural oven effect: whether slow-cooking, roasting or grilling, the heat retention and even distribution deliver outstanding results every time.

Double-walled & fully insulated · Cool exterior

Fully insulated on the top, bottom and sides, the double-walled firebox stays cool to the touch on the outside, even during use, a real safety advantage, especially around children.

This makes it ideal for terraces, covered areas, outdoor kitchens and pool houses, and even indoors with a suitable flue installed.

Because the exterior is not affected by the heat, the finish stays protected over time and needs only minimal maintenance.

Grill · Plancha · Pizza · Rotisserie · Fire

The Braai is fully modular: accessories can be swapped at any time. Chicken on the rotisserie and vegetables on the plancha, all at the same time on this FS1200.

And don't forget the direct heat of the ember maker, perfect for cooking in a cast-iron pan at high temperature (BBQ gloves are a must here).

Product description

Designed for those who see outdoor cooking as a true art of living, the built-in Smoak Braai elevates any outdoor space with a presence that is both discreet and striking. Made to integrate seamlessly into a high-end outdoor kitchen, it offers the elegance of a perfectly built-in appliance, in the service of an authentic and refined wood-fired cooking experience.

Its built-in installation gives it a distinctly architectural look: the Braai fits precisely into its surroundings, creating an elegant, contemporary visual continuity. This bespoke approach makes the most of your outdoor layout while creating a genuine, premium culinary space.

At its core lies Smoak's signature innovation: a fully insulated double-walled hearth paired with a fire-brick base. This unique structure generates a powerful, even oven effect for precise heat distribution. Built to last, it offers optimal comfort in use, moment after moment of sharing, in an atmosphere of calm and control.

With two distinct cooking zones, it lets you sear, slow-roast or keep dishes warm at the same time. Its 120 cm format and two stainless-steel grills adjustable to three heights make it ideal for those who cook for family and friends. Serve without stress and vary your cooking: meat, fish, vegetables, skewers, while keeping a gentler zone to finish or keep warm. A wood-fired cooking solution that combines performance, safety and elegance.

The principle is beautifully simple: burn wood in the fire box, let the embers fall through the bars, then spread them beneath the grill, plancha or pizza stone, and let the fire reveal its full power.

How long does delivery take, and how is it shipped?

As soon as we receive the order and payment, we will prepare the Braai for shipment.
Based on current stock levels, delivery takes 7-10 days, depending on the final destination.
If a Braai is temporarily out of stock, delivery will take a maximum of 3-4 weeks.
The Braai is always shipped on a pallet, so please keep in mind that it will always be delivered by truck.

Installation

The Braai unit (the Braai box) comes pre-assembled; it must either be placed on the included base or, if only the Braai box was ordered, placed on a solid worktop or piece of furniture, after which the chimney with the integrated louvered hood can be installed.
Installation instructions are included and can also be requested in advance.
The freestanding models are equipped with a single-walled chimney topped with a louvered hood.

Installation under a canopy:
We recommend switching to a double-walled chimney if the Braai is placed in a sheltered or enclosed space (porch, pool house, kitchen). In that case, we recommend choosing the adapter and the chimney cap; the adapter allows you to connect the Braai to a double-walled smoke duct. The chimney cap is used to conceal the chimney and complete the look of the Braai.
The parts for the flue are not included with the Braai. These must be ordered separately; of course, we're here to help you select the right parts.

How long does it take to build up cooking embers?

The ember maker of the Braai is designed to make building embers simple, efficient, and reliable. By creating a concentrated and controlled heat source, it allows wood to burn down evenly into a perfect bed of embers, ready for cooking.
This intelligent design not only simplifies the process, but also ensures an efficient and reliable result. In approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the wood used and fire conditions, you can achieve a rich, even ember bed ready to deliver excellent cooking performance.
Elegant in its simplicity and effective in its function, the ember maker enhances the Braai experience by combining convenience, control, and authenticity - so you can focus on what matters most: exceptional cooking and memorable moments around the fire.

How do you light a Braai?

There are several ways to light a Braai, but always begin with safety: never use gasoline or any other flammable liquid. These products release toxic fumes and are not suitable for cooking fires.
The ember maker is designed to create an immediate and effective draft through the Braai's chimney, allowing the fire to establish itself quickly and beautifully. For the best start, place the smaller logs upright in the ember maker from the very beginning. This encourages a steady airflow and helps the fire draw efficiently and burn evenly.
1. Place a few thin pieces of wood in or under the ember maker.
2. Add fire starters or kindling on top.
3. Position a mix of small and larger logs, approximately 5 to 10 cm thick, upright in the ember maker.
4. Light the fire starters with a lighter and allow the wood to ignite naturally.
This method helps the fire develop smoothly and creates the ideal base of embers for cooking.

What type of wood is recommended?

For the best Braai experience, we recommend using dry, seasoned hardwood. It burns steadily, produces beautiful embers, and creates less smoke, making it ideal for cooking over fire.
Avoid pine, coniferous wood, and damp wood. Softwoods and resin-rich woods burn too quickly, produce excessive smoke, and are less suitable for a clean, controlled fire.
For optimal performance, use wood in manageable pieces rather than large logs. Pieces with a diameter of around 5 to 10 cm are ideal, as they ignite more easily and help build a consistent, long-lasting bed of embers.
We also offer special Braai wood, such as Sekelbos - a dense, high-quality hardwood known for its excellent heat output, long burn time, and beautifully formed embers. It is a popular choice for those who value a rich, authentic fire-cooking experience.
If you would like more information about Sekelbos or other special types of Braai wood, please feel free to contact us. We would be delighted to advise you.

What does the 2-year manufacturer's warranty cover?

Our Braai comes with a 2-year warranty, provided it is used in accordance with the instructions in the manual. The warranty does not apply if the Braai has been used incorrectly, improperly maintained, or modified in any way.
